Wild medicinal plants of Donbass. Khatma thuringa and Horsetail.

Hatma thuringica ( Lavatera thuringica L.)

Hatma thuringa is a perennial of the mallow family, bushy, stem branched at the top, 60-120 cm tall. The flowers are large, solitary, pale pink or white, the fruit is shaped like a stool. Hatma thuringa grows everywhere in meadows, steppe slopes, along beams.

For medicinal purposes, the roots of Hatma turinga are used, less often the flowers and leaves. The chemical composition of chathma is poorly understood. The roots contain a lot of mucilage and the leaves contain vitamin C. Khatma has been found to have, like althea, expectorant, anti-inflammatory, enveloping, astringent effects.

It is used in folk medicine for inflammation of the respiratory tract (cough) and gastrointestinal tract (diarrhea), as well as colds, lymphoma, headache, peptic ulcer and female diseases, externally leaves are applied to lichen, make poultices for boils, joint pain and other diseases, some of the powder of leaves make ointment, in the ratio of 1 part raw material to 1 part fat, which rubbed from colds.

Methods of use:


1. Decoction of 8 g of root khatma in 250 ml of water to take 15 ml (children - 5 ml) 3-4 times a day as an expectorant (E. Ю. Chasse).


2. Tincture of 50 g root khatma in 0.5 liters of water 40% alcohol - 15 ml 3 times a day before meals, the course of 1 month or more for peptic ulcer disease.


3. 1 Art. spoonful of khatma root boiled 15 minutes in 0.5 liters of water, take 15-30 ml after 3-4 h as an expectorant, enveloping.



Field horsetail (Equisetum arvense L.)

Field horsetail is a perennial spore plant of the horsetail family, which has two generations in development - spring (sporiferous) - shoots 10-25 cm high, unbranched, reddish-white, succulent, ending with a sporiferous spike. The sterile shoots develop in early summer, they are green, straight, knotty, woolly, 10-50 cm high. The rhizome is creeping, black.

Field horsetail is found everywhere, but especially in the northern parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. It grows on wet sandy meadows, floodplain forest edges, among shrubs, in fields and vegetable gardens.

Use the summer herb, which contains a lot of silicic acid, tannins, bitters, resins, saponins, flavonoids, vitamin C, traces of alkaloids.

It has diuretic, styptic, wound-healing, antiseptic, anthelmintic, expectorant, juice, tonic, tonic, tonic and astringent effect, and also helps normalize water-salt metabolism, excretion of lead and other toxic substances and slags. Horsetail substances have a stimulating effect on the adrenal cortex, increase the formation of leukocytes, tonify the heart and lungs, as well as provide a state of equilibrium between colloids and crystalloids and thus prevent the formation of kidney stones.

It is used in medicine for edema of cardiac and renal origin, exudative pleurisy, inflammation of the bladder and urinary tract, hemorrhoidal and uterine bleeding.

Field Horsetail



Н. Г. Kovaleva used horsetail as a means of tonic blood vessels, with hypertension, atherosclerosis, kidney disease (in small doses), liver and gastrointestinal tract.

In diseases accompanied by severe lesions of the renal parenchyma (nephritis and nephrosis), horsetail should be used with caution. It is contraindicated in acute nephritis.

We in 24 patients with heart defects complicated by edema after the appointment of 15% decoction of horsetail herb noted a good diuretic effect.

In folk medicine is also used for lung diseases (tuberculosis), pancreas, various bleeding, dropsy, diarrhea, dysentery, kidney stones and gallbladder stones, rheumatism, gout, arthrosis, sciatica, obesity, various neoplasms, cardiac weakness, female diseases, enuresis and Addison's disease. Externally - juice, infusion (better decoction) to treat wounds, ulcers, burns, eczema, acne, ringworm, etc. д. and nasal bleeding, for spritzing with bleeding, for washing the head with seborrhea, for rinsing the mouth and throat, for foot baths with sweating, sitting baths with bladder stones. Horsetail is part of a bath collection that regulates metabolism. 10% infusion of horsetail herb - in the form of lotions for oily porous skin of the face, with seborrheic dermatitis (A. Д. Turowa). Infusion of the herb is also used in conjunctivitis.

Methods of application:


1. 10% decoction of horsetail herb - 15-50 ml 3 times a day.


2. Decoction of 30 g horsetail herb in 0.5 liters of boiling water (boil 10- 30 min) - 1/3 cup (C. А. Tomilin); or 0.5 liters per day (M. А. Nosal).


3. Decoction of 60 g horsetail herb in 1 liter of water - for external use.


4. Fresh juice, or preserved alcohol - 10- 15 ml 3 times a day as a styptic, diuretic.


5. Horsetail herb powder - 1 g 2 times a day for bleeding and for external use.


6. 20% tincture of horsetail herb on 40% alcohol - 15 ml 3 times a day for arthritis, gynecological diseases.


7. 15-20 g horsetail herb insist in 1 liter of white wine for a long time, take in the morning on an empty stomach 100-150 ml as a styptic and externally - as a lotion (N. Г. Kovalev).


8. Ointment of 1 part extract (tincture) or condensed decoction to 4 parts butter.


9. Grass horsetail, shepherd's purse, blackberry root, oak bark - equal parts of each; 2 tbsp. spoonfuls of the mixture cook in 0.5 liters of water over low heat until 1 /2 remains, infuse, drink sips every 15 minutes until bleeding stops (P. Dimkov) (cit. By W. Petkov).



There are 6 other species of horsetails growing in the Donbass. On dry chernozem soils and clay sites, branching horsetail (E. ramosissimum Desf.), in which the sporonosome develops on green vegetative shoots in summer in contrast to field horsetail. It is only used in folk medicine similar to horsetail.

It was experimentally established that preparations of horsetail have diuretic properties and do not cause toxic and inflammatory phenomena in the urinary tract (I. А. Damirov et al.)..
