Wild medicinal plants of Donbass. Violet of doubtful and Violet of field.

Doubtful violet (Viola ambigua W. et K.)

Violet variegated, Ukr.: pidliski, kinski kopitzi. The plant is poisonous.

Violet dubious is a perennial commonly known small plant in the violet family - without an above-ground stem. The flowers are fragrant, purple. It blooms in April through May. Cultivated by florists. Violet dubious grows everywhere in steppe, sparse woods, groves, along hills, on rocky outcrops, fields, and between shrubs. There are 18 species of violets in the Donbass, including the fragrant violet (V. violet. odorata L.).

Doubtful Violet

The herb, sometimes the roots of the violet are used. Violet of doubt contains essential oil, vitamin C, carotene, glycosides. It has expectorant, diuretic, antiseptic, sedative, antipyretic, laxative (root - vomiting effect), and also slightly reduces blood pressure.

Violet doubtful is popular in folk medicine for respiratory diseases, pulmonary emphysema, renal pelvis and bladder, uric acid diathesis, allergies, enuresis, pulmonary tuberculosis, whooping cough, bronchial asthma, jaundice, scrofula, influenza, neuroses, hysteria, epilepsy, palpitations, insomnia, convulsions, headaches, gout, diseases of the joints, throat and oral mucosa, and the root - for inoperable cancer.

Externally make lotions, compresses, baths from the decoction of the herb violet, poultices from the herb (fresh or dried), cooked leaves are applied to purulent wounds, boils, edema, inflamed skin, and decoction rinse the mouth with stomatitis, sore throat, flu.

Д. Yordanov recommends syrup: 50 g crushed herb violet with flowers insist in 150 ml of boiling water for 24 hours, strain, add 200 g of sugar, heat to dissolve, take 5 ml 4-5 times a day for choking and as an expectorant. Higher doses of violet cause vomiting.

Methods of application:


1. 2 Art. spoonfuls of raw materials insist 2 hours in 400 ml of boiling water - 100 ml 4 times a day for bronchitis, pyelitis, uric acid diathesis.


2. 2 ч. spoonfuls of violet herb with root insist in 250 ml of water in a cold place for 8h, drink during the day (D. Yordanov).


3. 10-20 g crushed roots of violet insist in 250 ml boiling water 1 h - 15 ml 5-6 times a day after meals as an expectorant.


4. Decoction of 15 g fresh or dried leaves or root of violets in 250 ml of water - 5-15 ml every 2 hours for whooping cough, adults - 150 ml 3 times a day.


5. Tincture of 25% on 40% alcohol - 25 drops 3 times a day as an expectorant.


6. Grass violet fragrant, strawberry leaves, roots of elecampane and burdock - 50 g, willow bark and birch leaves - 100 g; 3-4 tbsp. spoonfuls of the mixture boiled 5 min in 750 ml of water, infuse, take 100 ml after 2 h in arthrozoarthritis (D. Pamukov).



Due to the dwindling supply of raw materials, it is more appropriate to use only the herb, without the root.

Field violet (Viola arvensis Murr.)


Ukr.: fialka polova.

Field violet is an annual plant of the violet family with a straight, sometimes branched leafy stem 15-30 cm high. Flowers up to 1.5 cm in diameter, in contrast to tricolor violet corolla bicolor - white-yellow. It blooms from May to fall.

Field violet is found everywhere as a weed in fallow fields, fallow fields, forest edges, flood meadows, among shrubs.

The herb of tricolored violet (ivan-da-marya, pansy eyes (bratki), which is not found in Donbass, is also used in medicine. It contains many saponins, flavonoids, glycosides, essential oil, mucus, carotene, salicylates, alkaloid, carotenoids, vitamins C, E, P and other substances. It is allowed to use field violet along with tricolored violet.

Tricolored Violet



Field violet is close to tricolor violet in chemical composition and action, but contains more violin alkaloid and less saponins (B. И. Chopik). In pharmacy preparations, a mixture of the two species is used.

Violet field violet has expectorant, anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory, tonic, diuretic, emollient, diaphoretic, blood purifying, disinfectant action, and also promotes uterine contraction in the postpartum period and normalizes metabolism.

Used in medicine for respiratory catarrhs and pediatric diathesis. Included in expectorants and diuretics. Previously produced preparations triviolin and primulin, the herb was included in the anti-allergic collection "Averin tea".

Prof. С. А. Tomilin observed the effectiveness of violet infusion in chronic skin diseases (eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis) and in scabies without the concomitant use of external ointments.

А. П. Levchuk recommends as a diuretic infusion of 30 g of violet herb in 300-400 ml of water, or decoction of 10 g of root in 300 ml of water (boiled at 1/3) - 15 ml 5-6 times a day, as a laxative - 45 ml, and in an even larger dose - as a vomiting.

In folk medicine it is also used for whooping cough, colds, bronchial asthma, kidney diseases and stones, gastritis, rheumatism, gout, arthrosis, increased sexual excitement, various bleeding, tuberculosis of the lungs and lymph nodes, heart disease, palpitations, atherosclerosis, cystitis, rickets, female diseases and various skin lesions.

In Azerbaijan, the infusion of herbs and juice of violets are given to children to drink when scrofula and at the same time rub into the skin infusion of herbs of violets or make lotions. Grinded herb is applied to the lichens. The infusion is used for gargling for diseases of the pharynx, enlarged tonsils, toothache. In skin diseases (furunculosis, trophic ulcer, rashes, acne) from the infusion make lotions, compresses, washes. In the decoction of the herb violet bathe children with diathesis, eczema, scrofulosis and give them to drink it. Baths are also used for skin and joint diseases.

М. А. Nosal in scrofula recommends ointment: 10 g of violet flowers and 5 g of buddleia and vervain grass boiled 5-10 minutes in 100 ml of vegetable or almond oil, insist, squeeze, strain, apply on gauze. The hair on the head is removed beforehand.

Methods of application:


1. 2.5-5-10% infusion - 15-100 ml 3-5 times a day as an expectorant, diuretic.


2. Tincture of 20-30% on 40% alcohol - 20-30 drops 3 times a day as an expectorant, anti-allergic.


3. Powder of violet herb (sometimes with sugar) - 0.2-0.5 g 2-4 times a day (children) as an expectorant.


4. Grass violet and succession - 20 g of each; 1 tbsp. spoon of the mixture insist in 250 ml of boiling water - 15 ml 3-4 times a day for scrofula.


5. Violet herb - 5 parts, marigold flowers - 3 parts and burdock root - 2 parts; 1 tbsp. spoonful of the mixture to infuse 3-4 hours in 250 ml of cold water, boiled for 1 minute - 1/2 cup 2-3 times a day for furunculosis (V. В. Karhut).


6. Birch leaves, black currant - 5 parts each, oregano herb - 3 parts, violets - 2 parts, thyme - 4 parts, eucalyptus leaves - 1 part; 3 tbsp. spoons of the collection bring to a boil in 1 liter of water, insist - for sitting baths for cystitis.



Violet is contraindicated in glomerulonephritis and hepatitis..
