Common hops (Humulus lupulus L.)


Ukr.: hmsh zvichajnyy. The plant is poisonous.

Common hops is a perennial creeper in the hemp family. In Donbass it is found in floodplain and bairn forests, river valleys, deep gullies, breeds in vegetable gardens and orchards. In medicine, the ripened copepods (cones) are used, which contain glands that turn into a yellow powder - lupulin - during ripening. The cones contain essential oil, bitter substance, resins, wax, gum, flavonoids, alkaloid humulin, phytoncides, vitamin C and others, especially a lot of vitamin C in fresh leaves.

Common hops has sedative, sedative, soporific, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, analgesic, antispasmodic, diuretic, as well as estrogenic activity, tonifies the heart, gastrointestinal tract and improves appetite. In medicine it is used for various neuroses, intestinal spasms, angina pectoris, cystitis and frequent urges to urinate.

Е. А. Ladynina recommends hops for hypertensive neurocirculatory dystonia, menopause, asthenia and urethritis. Ф. И. Mamchur uses hops in the treatment of pyelonephritis.

Common hop is used in folk medicine, in addition, for insomnia, nervous fatigue and exhaustion, hysteria, palpitations, dropsy, jaundice, worms, pediatric anemia, kidney, liver and gallbladder diseases, biliary stone disease, cystalgia, prostatitis, chronic gastrointestinal diseases, painful menstruation, nocturnal pollutions and excessive sexual excitability, headache, constipation, cardiac weakness, neuralgia, radiculitis, furunculosis, general metabolic disorders, general weakness, hop roots - for jaundice and migraine.

H. Г. Kovaleva used hops in the form of baths for dysuria, insomnia, hypertension and atherosclerosis.

From insomnia and neurasthenia use small pillows (15X15cm) filled with fresh hop cones, which are placed under a regular pillow at night. Lupulin was included in ointments against painful and prolonged ulcers and boils, and for joint diseases. Decoction of cones wash the head from dandruff and to strengthen the hair in early baldness. Infusion of hop cones in the form of cautery - with painful boils, ulcers, scrofula, eczema, acne, inflammation of the skin and joint diseases.

Methods of application:


I. 10% infusion of hop cones - 1/3 cup 3 times a day for neuroses, kidney disease, liver (S. А. Tomilin).


2. 2 Art. spoonfuls of hop cones insist 2 hours in 300 ml of boiling water - 100 ml 3 times a day before meals (D. Pamukov).


3. Infusion of 20 g of hop cones in 1 liter of boiling water, used 3 cups a day with excessive sexual excitability, pollutions and painful erections.


4. Tincture of 20% or tincture of 1 part of hop cones in 4 parts of alcohol - 5-10 drops on sugar or water in the morning and at night.


5. Powder of hop cones - 0.5- 1 tsp. a spoonful three times a day for insomnia.


6. Ointment of 1 part of powder of hop cones and 1 part of unsalted lard; or of 1 part of condensed decoction and 4 parts of fat - for rubbing.



Hops are included in the preparations of valocordine, urolesan and sedative tea.

Chicory common (Cichorium intybus L.)


Wild chicory, petrov whip, Ukr.: petrov batig.

Common chicory is a perennial of the aster family with a fleshy root and branched stem 30-150 cm high. Flowers are blue, less often white, opening at 4-5 am and closing at 2-15 pm. It blooms from June through fall. Grows ubiquitously in vacant lots, meadows, near roads, in fallow areas, along slopes, and other places.

Chicory root and herb are used in folk medicine for medicinal purposes. Roots contain polysaccharide inulin (up to 40%), glycoside intibin, sugars, choline, carotene, vitamin C, Bi, tannins and other substances, flowers contain glycoside chicory, leaves contain inulin, lactones, triterpenes, cichoric acid, etc. д. The plant is rich in milky sap containing bitter substances - lactucine and others.

Common chicory has choleretic, anti-inflammatory, desensitizing, diuretic, sedative, loosening, antimicrobial, wound-healing effect, and stimulates the secretion of the stomach, pancreas, reducing blood sugar, improves metabolism and enhances heart function, increasing the amplitude and slowing the rhythm of heart contractions.

Therefore, chicory is popular in people with diseases of the liver, biliary tract, kidney, heart, gastrointestinal tract, spleen, liver cirrhosis with portal hypertension, tapeworms, worms in children, peptic ulcer, gallbladder dyskinesia, heartburn, chronic constipation, enuresis, difficulty urinating, dropsy, hematuria, scurvy, neuroses, hysteria, hypochondria, hemorrhoids, asthenia, general decline in strength, mild form of diabetes mellitus and as. a blood-improving and appetizing agent.

Е. А. Ladynina points out that chicory helps to eliminate excess cholesterol from the body. The author recommends it for atherosclerosis, obesity, mineral metabolism disorders, kidney and gallstone disease, gout, osteochandrosis, joint diseases. It is added to collections for spleen, pancreas and other diseases.

Н. И. Solomchenko in patients with heart disease, complicated by ascites (dropsy), noted a good diuretic effect of decoction of grass with chicory root and pumpkin stalks 1-2 tbsp. spoonfuls of each in 0.5 liters of water and more - 1/3 cup 3 times a day. Use chicory root with sugar for worm infestation.

H. Г. Kovaleva recommended chicory in hypertension as a substitute for coffee. Infusion of flowers is used in neuroses and cardiac weakness.

In German folk medicine, an infusion of chicory herb is used internally as a blood cleanser for rashes, acne and boils. Use the herb for pastes on the joints, and 10% decoction of grass and chicory root - for rinses, lotions and baths for eczema, boils, long non-healing wounds, ulcers, rashes, barley and inflammation of the eyes, chicken pox. In these diseases are also used alcoholic tincture of chicory in the form of rubbing. Chicory decoction is washed on the head to strengthen the hair. Ointment from ashes of the herb on sour cream or fat is used for eczema, pustular skin diseases and old ulcers. In a decoction of chicory herb make baths for diathesis in children.

Methods of application:


1. Infusion of 1-2 tsp. spoonfuls of chicory herb in 250 ml of boiling water - 1 /2 cup 2-3 times a day for 30 minutes before meals for gastritis.


2. 10% decoction of the root - 15 ml 3 times a day before meals as an appetizer, or 70-100 g 3 times a day as a laxative (S. А. Tomilin).


3. 1 Art. spoonful of chicory root or 2 tbsp. spoonfuls of herb boil 10 min in 400 ml of water - 100 ml 3 times a day before meals (D. Pamukov).


4. 2 Art. spoons of chicory root and herb infuse in 0.5 liters of boiling water, take during the day; infusion of 3-4 st. spoonfuls of raw materials in 0.5 liters of boiling water - for external use.


5. Fresh juice of leaves - 15 ml 3-4 times a day in a cup of milk for 4-6 weeks for anemia and scurvy.


6. 20% tincture of grass and chicory root in 40% alcohol (external).


7. Chicory roots and dandelion, leaves trifolia, mint, herb turnip - 50 g each; tbsp. spoonful of the mixture insist in 250 ml of boiling water - a daily dose for biliary stone disease.


8. Grass chicory - 3 parts, St. John's wort - 4 parts, ergot - 2 parts, flowers of cumin - 4 parts, chamomile - 1 part, marigolds - 4 parts and bark cruschina - 3 parts; 3 tbsp. spoonful of the mixture to insist 12 h in 3 cups of water, then boil for 5 min, insist - 1/2 cup 4 times a day 1 h after meals for chronic liver disease (B. В. Karhut).
