An annual of the buckwheat family with a straight or branched, knotty stem 30-100 cm high. Leaves are ordinary, broadly lanceolate, often with brown or black spots in the center of the leaf on the upper surface. The flowers are small, greenish pink or white. Unlike the peppery throat, its fresh leaves do not have a pungent taste. It blooms in July through August. It grows everywhere in damp places, along the banks of water bodies, as a weed in vegetable gardens and fields, in lowlands.

The herb contains tannin, gallic acid, essential oil, phlobaphenes, flavones, vitamins C and K, organic acids and pectin.
Galenic preparations of it have been found to have a pronounced styptic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antiseptic, astringent, diuretic, vasoconstrictor, gentle but quite pronounced laxative action, as well as increase blood coagulation and viscosity, increase heart activity and tonify the uterus and intestines. It's patented as a treatment for swelling.
The plant has been studied and introduced into scientific medicine from folk medicine at the Kazakh Medical Institute. Galenic drugs are used in atonic and spastic constipation, bleeding (uterine, hemorrhoidal, intestinal), as well as inflammatory processes of the female genital organs and hemorrhoids. In acute nephritis and pregnancy infusion is contraindicated.

Methods of application:
1. Infusion of the herb Highlander 10% - 20-100 ml 3 times a day before meals for 1-4 weeks and more with hemorrhoids, constipation.
2. Liquid extract - 30-40 drops 3 times a day for constipation.
3. Infusion of 1 tbsp. spoonfuls of herbs of bitter grass in 250 ml of boiling water - 0.5 cup 2-3 times a day after meals for hemorrhoids, constipation.
4. 10% tincture of herb gortse on 40% alcohol - 30-40 drops 2 times a day for hemorrhoids, constipation.
