Wild medicinal plants of Donbass. The European Zuznick and the White Willow.

European wort (Lycopus europaeus L.)



Nettle marsh nettle, water shandra, Ukr.: vovkonig, vovcha lapa.

Zuznik europeansky is a perennial of the family Gubotvetaceae with a height of 35-100 (tab. X). It blooms in June through August. The smell of the grass is fragrant. Zuznik european - grows everywhere on the banks of rivers, ponds, along ditches and damp meadows.

The herb harvested during flowering is used. It is found to contain many tannins, essential oil, lycopene, glycosides, saponins, resins, traces of flavonoids, alkaloids and choline-like substances.

С. А. Tomilin pointed out that European zuznik is an excellent remedy to combat severe attacks of palpitations, in cases of bazedema and heart rhythm disorders (extrasystole), which usually resort to quinidine.

German physicians, as well as R. L Khazanovich recommend in endocarditis and basidovye disease alcoholic extract from the herb zuznik.

Zuznik European is used in folk medicine for dyspepsia, stomach pain, simple and bloody diarrhea, neurosis, malaria, insomnia, cardiac weakness, edema, thyrotoxicosis with heart damage, uterine bleeding, hypertension and furunculosis.

In the Far East and China, shiny zuznik grows, which also contains a glycoside. It has been found to have an active effect on the heart and also as a diuretic. Use root, leaves and fruits in the form of decoction; single dose 3-7 g (F. И. Ibragimov, A. И. Schroeter).

Methods of application:


1. 2-4 sts. spoonfuls of herbs zuznik insist in 1-2 cups of boiling water for 2 hours - 1/3-1/2 cup 3-4 times a day before meals.


2. 10-20% tincture of herb zuznika at 40% alcohol - 1 tsp. spoon 3 times a day with water before meals in thyrotoxicosis, cardiac arrhythmias.



It is also recommended to use the powder of the leaves and mixed with an equal part of motherwort herb.

The plant deserves further study.

White willow (Salix alba L.)



Vetla, ukr.: verba bila.

The white willow is a well-known large tree in the willow family. It grows everywhere along the banks of rivers, ponds, in valleys, near housing, in parks.

In Ukraine there are 18 species of willows, which are used for medicinal purposes - willow goat (bredina) (S. sarghea L.).

The bark of young trees or young (2-3 year old) branches on old trees are harvested for treatment. The bark contains many tannins, salicin glycoside, flavones, vitamin C and resins.

White willow was previously used in folk medicine for infectious diseases and malaria (instead of quinine).

At present, various types of willow are widely used for inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, colds, coughs, whooping cough, pneumonia, pleurisy, pulmonary tuberculosis, spring asthenia, poor appetite, inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, diarrhea, dysentery, dyspepsia, intestinal and biliary dyskinesia, diseases of the liver, spleen, joints, gallstone disease, jaundice, stomach bleeding, rheumatism, etc. д.

Male flowers (earrings) are used for neuroses, palpitations and arrhythmias of the heart. Goat willow (rakita) is useful in heart neuroses.

Alcohol tincture of 10% and aqueous decoction of male inflorescences of it act on the heart like foxglove (Nesuderi E.) (Citation. By W. Г. Minaeva).

Decoction of male inflorescences of willow brittle is used in inflammation of the kidneys. The forehead is applied to burned places, and the juice of heated young branches is smeared with calluses. Hot baths from decoction of willow bark are used in epidermophytosis (A. И. Schroeter).

Decoction of willow bark and burdock roots (in equal parts) used to wash the head with itching, dandruff and to strengthen the hair. Avicenna pointed out that an ointment of wood ash with vinegar reduced warts and lichen on the lips, and the juice of the leaves was put into the ear for suppuration. Some doctors in vesicular eczema recommend doing alternating baths of decoction of willow bark and birch buds.

Methods of Application.


1. 1 Art. spoon of willow bark insist in O,5 liters of boiling water in a thermos for 6 hours, drink in 3 receptions for 20-40 minutes before meals with diarrhea, joint disease, hypertension (E. А. Ladynina).


2. 10-20 g willow bark boiled in 0.5 liters of water over low heat for 15-20 minutes - 15-30 ml 3-4 times a day or every 2 hours for joint disease, gastritis, diarrhea, uterine bleeding.


3. 5-10 g, or 1 tbsp. spoon finely chopped willow bark insist 4-8 hours in 0.5 liters of cooled water - 50-100 ml 2- 4 times a day before meals (M. А. Garbarets et al.).


4. 10% decoction of willow bark - for gargling in stomatitis.


5. Willow bark powder - 1-2 g 3 times a day for neuroses (S. А. Tomilin).


6. Willow bark and birch leaves - 100 g, burdock roots, elecampane, herb violet fragrant and strawberry leaves - 50 g, mix, 3 tbsp. spoonfuls of the collection boiled for 5 minutes in 700 ml of water, drink 100 ml after 2 h in arthrozoarthritis (D. Pamukov).


7. 10 g willow bark and 8 g of strawberry root boiled in 0.5 liters of water for 10 minutes on low heat, drink sips during the day for ulcerative colitis (V. В. Karhut).


8. Willow bark, stalnick root and herb hernia in the ratio of 2:1:1; 1 tbsp. spoonful of the mixture insist 30 minutes in 250 ml of boiling water - 250 ml 3 times a day for inflammation of the urinary tract.
