Valeriana stolonifera (Valeriana stolonifera Czern.)

.
Valerian, cat root, maun, uk.: over"yan.

Perennial from the valerian family (from the Latin word "valere", which means to be healthy, strong). It blooms in May - July (tab. 6). It grows everywhere in many areas of Donbas in forests, along edges, river valleys and among shrubs, but does not form extensive thickets. Therefore, it has been introduced into culture in state and collective farms of the country. It grows well in the conditions of Donbass, renews itself by self-seeding.

Cultivated valerian gives a large yield and better quality raw material than wild-growing valerian. However, the root of flowering specimens becomes woody and rotten. In the second-year plot, when growing it for raw material, it is necessary to carry out topshkovanie (passyankovanie), that is, cut flower-bearing stems at the beginning of their growth, which contributes to a significant increase in root yield. The raw material is harvested in early spring or fall. Drying and storage of valerian should be carried out in rooms not accessible to cats, which willingly chew and scatter the roots of valerian.

The therapeutic effect of valerian is due to the complex of biologically active substances contained in it: essential oil, alkaloids, glycosides-valerosides, valepotriates and others.

It is used in conditions of increased nervous excitability, general neuroses (hysteria, neurasthenia, psychasthenia), neuralgia, neuroses of the heart, palpitations, arrhythmias of the heart, vegetoneuroses, neurodermatitis, insomnia, hyperthyroidism, chorea, migraine, fainting, preclimax, climax, liver and biliary tract diseases; non-sugar diabetes, spasms of smooth muscle organs of the abdominal cavity, glandular secretion disorders, as well as for prevention and treatment in the early stages of angina pectoris and hypertension (C. Я. Sokolov).

Prof. B. Е. Votchal recommended taking 1 tbsp. for the prevention of nervous breakdown in men. a spoonful of valerian tincture per dose. In small doses it has a tonic effect. Valerian is effective, especially its tincture of fresh roots and infusion of valerian root on cold water, with systematic and prolonged use, but not more than 1.5-2 months. In some individuals with individual intolerance in case of prolonged use of it and overdose of preparations, drowsiness, headaches, feeling of depression, depressed general condition and decreased efficiency are possible. These side effects disappear quickly when the dose is reduced or the drugs are temporarily discontinued.

The use of high doses of valerian may increase blood clotting. Е. А. Ladynina does not recommend valerian in chronic enterocolitis and nephritis. Children with abdominal pain, vomiting, convulsions preparations of valerian shoots are administered orally and in the form of enemas.

In neuroses, insomnia, epilepsy and diathesis children bathed for 15 minutes before bedtime daily or every other day in a warm decoction of 3-4 tbsp. spoonfuls, or 1 handful of valerian root in 1 liter of water (boiled for 10 minutes).
