Medicinal hyssop is a perennial herbaceous plant or semi-shrub from the family of sponges. The stem is tetrahedral, erect, covered with hairs, 20-50 cm high. Leaves are almost sessile, suprotic, short-petiolate, lanceolate, entire-edged. Flowers are small, pink, purple and white, 5-7 in leaf axils, forming oblong spike-like inflorescences. Medicinal hyssop blooms from July to September. The whole plant is strongly aromatic (Fig. 27).

Medicinal hyssop grows in Mediterranean countries. Widespread in the forest-steppe and steppe zones of the European part of the USSR, in Crimea, the Caucasus, Central Asia and Altai. Medicinal hyssop grows wild in stony places. Cultivated in gardens and vegetable gardens as a medicinal and ornamental plant. Honeybee. Hyssop honey is among the best varieties.

The flowering leafy shoots are used, collected at the beginning of flowering. Dried hyssop has a pungent odor and the taste is bitter.

Chemical composition and properties of hyssop



The properties of hyssop have been studied by phytotherapists and are used to treat many diseases. In the herb, 0.6-1% essential oil was found, which has a camphor odor; in the leaves and inflorescences, 0.8-2%. The greatest amount of essential oil is found at the beginning of flowering. The composition of essential oil includes various terpenes (pinene, camphene, cineol), sesquiterpenes, tannins, triterpene compounds - ursolic and oleanic acids; flavonoids, diosmin, hyssopine, bitter substances, pigments, etc.

Hyssop effects and treatment

Hyssop treatment brings antiseptic and antispasmodic effects.

In the USSR, hyssop treatment was not used in scientific medicine.

In Bulgarian medicine it is used in bronchitis, asthma, chronic gastritis and as an antitussive agent. The properties of hyssop have an antibacterial effect and can flush out infection from the respiratory system.

The medicinal properties of hyssop are found in all parts of the plant. In Indian medicine, besides the herb, which is also used for asthma and cough, the leaves alone find use as a stimulant and digestive aid (Chopra et all., 1956).

In the GDR, the above-ground part of hyssop herb was used as sage to reduce sweating, especially in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, and in menopausal women, as well as in the form of gargles. The ketone in the essential oil is used to treat bronchial asthma and catarrh of the upper respiratory tract (Dorfler and Roselt, 1964).

In Austria, hyssop treatment was recommended in the form of a decoction. This medicine was used to treat chronic bronchitis and was also used as a sweat-reducing agent.

A 1% alcohol solution is used as a gargle.

Long-term use is not recommended (Neithaller, 1964).

In France, the properties of hyssop have long been used as a tonic (in diseases of the nervous system with caution, in smaller doses) for bronchitis, as well as for various diseases of the throat in the form of gargling. Externally in the form of lotions for resorption of subcutaneous hemorrhages of traumatic origin and in sprains.

In bronchitis is recommended: hyssop flowers - 100 g, boiling water - 1000 g, sugar - 160 g. Drink 100 g per day.

The herb is included as an official raw material in the pharmacopoeias of France, Portugal, Romania, Sweden (Klan, 1948), GDR and FRG (Norre, 1958).

In domestic folk medicine, the herb hyssop is used as a mildly energizing agent. Treatment with hyssop was prescribed for poor digestion in the form of decoction, as well as for rheumatism, chest pain, bronchial asthma, catarrh of the upper respiratory tract. Externally - for eye wash and throat gargle. Decoction of the herb along with wine berries are boiled and used by teaspoonful for cough, chest pain. In Bulgarian folk medicine decoction of the herb is used in chronic dyspepsia, anemia, as an anthelmintic, bronchitis. Externally as a compress for conjunctivitis.

Hyssop herb is used in the liqueur and bottling industry to make chartreuse liqueur. It has also been positively evaluated as a spice and flavor raw material for fish products. Fresh dried leaves and inflorescences are used in cooking as a spicy seasoning. It is also used for cosmetic products.
