Medicinal bloodroot (Sanguisorba officinalis L.)



Krasnogolovka, Ukr.: rhodovik likarskii, blood-head.

Bloodroot medicinal is a perennial from the family Rosaceae with a height of up to 100-120 cm. The stems are branched at the top. Leaves are apical, unpaired, long-petiolate. Bloodroot medicinal has small, dark red flowers gathered in heads on long pedicels. It blooms in June through August. Bloodroot medicinal grows in wet meadows, forest edges and glades, among shrubs. It takes good root in culture.

Rhizomes with roots are used, which contain tannins, mainly gallotannins, saponins, carotene, starch, essential oil (traces), phytoncides and trace elements; leaves - vitamin C and flavonoids. Sometimes the herb is used instead of the root of bloodroot.

The preparations have good astringent, styptic, vasoconstrictor, analgesic, antispastic, wound healing and bactericidal action against Escherichia coli, microbes of dysentery and paratyphoid groups, as well as protistocidal action.

Bloodwort medicinal - used in medicine for diarrhea of various etiologies, ulcerative nonspecific colitis, proctosigmoiditis, acute and chronic enterocolitis, various internal and uterine bleeding, cholecystitis, dysentery (along with antibiotics and intolerance to chemopreparations), as well as thrombophlebitis of the lower extremities.

In cholecystitis used 10% decoction of the root of bloodwort 15 ml 3-4 times a day. In giardia cholecystitis, physician M. Ф. Nevelika (Leningrad) recommends administering through the duodenal tube 100 ml of 33% decoction of bloodroot root. For a course of 3-8 infusions, after 1-2 months, repeat the course of treatment.

Tomsk doctors used in chronic dysentery 10 % decoction of the root of bloodwort 200 ml (children under a year) and 300-400 ml to older children. We used 20% alcohol tincture in 30 patients with acute and chronic enterocolitis, in most of them noted a good astringent effect of this drug.

Prof. A. М. Foy (Leningrad) used in trichome-adenal colpitis with spritzing or tampons with 20% daily infusion of roots. Е. Т. Mikhaylenko and coauthors bloodwort recommended for heavy uterine bleeding and hemorrhagic metropathy or after abortion: decoction of 1 tbsp. spoonfuls of root in 250 ml of water - 15 ml 3 times a day, as well as for spritzing with bacterial and trichomonad colpitis, vaginitis and true erosion of the cervix (100 ml of decoction of bloodwort diluted to 1 liter of boiled water for spritzing 1-2 times a day).

Externally, the drugs are used for poorly healing wounds and ulcers, burns, acute purulent conjunctivitis in children (decoction of the root of bloodwort), for baths and microclysters with hemorrhoids. In inflammatory processes of the oral cavity use a decoction of bloodwort for gargling, and the tincture is smeared on the gums. For bruises, bruises, abrasions make poultices of boiling water and wrapped in gauze 3-4 tbsp. spoonfuls of herbs. In inflammation of the skin, burns, bleeding and purulent wounds, wet eczema, bedsores, trophic ulcers make washings, compresses and lotions from the decoction of 2 tbsp. spoonfuls of roots in 0.5 liters of water.

For spritzings and microclysters also use a solution of 15 ml of tincture in 200-300 ml of water. Sometimes used for micro enemas and tampons 20% decoction of roots in vegetable oil.

In folk medicine, the medicinal bloodroot is also very popular and is considered a valuable therapeutic remedy. It is used for diarrhea and abdominal pain, flatulence, peptic ulcer, food poisoning.

Methods of application:


1. 10-15% decoction of bloodworm root - 15 ml every 2 hours until the onset of the effect (up to 400-500 ml per day), and then 15 ml 3 times a day for 5-7 days, and children 1 tsp. spoonful per appointment for acute enterocolitis and other diseases.


2. Liquid extract - 50 drops or 5 ml 3 times a day for bleeding, children - 15-25 drops per reception.


3. Root powder bloodroot - 0.5-1-2 g 3 times a day with diarrhea.


4. 20% tincture of bloodworm root - 5-15 ml 3 times a day for various bleeding.


5. 10-20% ointment of bloodwort root powder on fat (external).


6. 1-2 sts. spoonfuls of dried herb bloodroot insist 8h in 0.5 liters of cooled boiled water - 1/4 cup 4 times a day before meals with diarrhea, various bleeding.


7. 1 Art. spoonful of root boiled for 30 minutes in 0.5 liters of water, insist - 15-30 ml 3-6 times a day before meals with diarrhea, bleeding.


8. Collection of rhizome bloodroot (or root lapchatka or kermeka), horse sorrel, geranium meadow and gravilat urban - 2-3 tsp. spoonfuls of each, ergot herb - 1-2 tbsp. spoons, horsetail grass - 2-4 tbsp. spoonfuls; boil for 20 min in 1.5 l of water and add 3-4 tbsp. to the broth. spoonfuls of a mixture of herbs taken equally (St. John's wort, yarrow, water pepper, shepherd's purse, nettle dicot, plantain leaves, eucalyptus, flowers of white clary grass, annual dry flower, corn stigmas and cherry stalks), boil over low heat for 2 minutes, infuse for 1 hour, take 100-200 ml 3-4 times a day before meals as a styptic, astringent (N. И. Solomchenko).



Cupena medicinalis (Polygonatum officinale All. L.)



Marigold (P. odoratum (Mill.) Druce.); gladysh, magpie berries, straw seal, ukr.kupina, kitten's rib, kupena-lupena.

Cupena medicinalis is an herbaceous perennial from the lily family. The rhizome is thick (resembling iris), nodular, horizontal. The holes on the rhizome determine the age of the plant. The stem is straight at the bottom and curved at the top, 30-65 cm high. Leaves are regular, elliptic, shiny (slightly resembling lily of the valley leaves). It blooms in May - June (tab. 14).

Coupena medicinal - grows everywhere in forested areas of Donbass. The multiflowered koupena (P. multiflorum L. All.), which differs from the first one by its high stem (up to 120 cm), strong root and a large number of berries in the axils of leaves (3-5 each).

Cupena medicinalis is used for medicinal purposes, more specifically its raw or dried rhizomes. The chemical composition is poorly understood. In the rhizome of kupena found: saponins, cardiac glycosides, as in lily of the valley, alkaloids, mucus, starch, sugars, asparagine, in the leaves a lot of vitamin C and carotene. All organs, especially the fruit, have a vomiting property.

In the Caucasus, young stems and shoots are eaten. Rhizomes of kupena, previously boiled in salted water, eaten as a vegetable.

A decoction of the rhizomes of kupena is superior in viscosity to the roots of althea and the tubers of yatryshniki. Both species of kupena are used in folk medicine - for bronchitis, pneumonia, cough, pulmonary tuberculosis, colds, fever, trembling of the limbs, gastritis, peptic ulcer, dropsy, jaundice, biliary stone disease, diabetes, weakness, diarrhea. A decoction of kupena rhizomes in milk was used for impotence (A. И. Schroeter, W. И. Chopik, V. И. Zavrazhnov).

In the Caucasus alcoholic tincture of rhizomes of kupena drink with scabs on the body and pimples on the face, rhizome is part of the collection for female diseases and lower back pain. In China, the stems of the plant are used for hypertension. In Tibetan medicine kupena rhizomes are used as a gastrointestinal remedy, for edema, diarrhea, prescribed in powders for a number of acute and chronic gynecological diseases.

Widely used externally - leaves are applied to boils, wounds or they are covered with powder, from the decoction of rhizomes make poultices, lotions, compresses for bruises, boils, abrasions, bruises, pustules, pimples, scabs, gout, lumbago, hemorrhoids, joint pain, toothache. Decoction of herbs and rhizomes of kupena - for baths in diathesis in children. Juice of fresh rhizomes of kupena or decoction of dry poured wounds and bleeding ulcers.

Alcoholic tincture or decoction of rhizomes used for rubbing in joint and muscle diseases, tincture rubbed into the skin in chronic dry eczema and warts. Fresh rhizomes are rubbed on joints when they are deformed. Fresh herb is used externally for scrofula, panarisis, abscesses, dermatitis and swelling. The water infusion is used to wash your face for sunburn. Fresh juice or decoction reduce age spots and freckles on the face, but use the juice should be careful - you can cause skin burns.

In the Far East, rhizomes and lower (pale) parts of freshly harvested plant are cut into pieces and sprinkled with sugar or their decoction is used as poison for flies. Place the bait in places inaccessible to children (cit. By N. К. Fruen-tov).

Methods of application:


1. 1 Art. spoon rhizomes kupena boiled for 20 minutes in 0.5 liters of water - 1/4 cup 2-3 times a day as an expectorant.


2. 50 g rhizomes of kupena boiled for 30 minutes in 0.5 liters of water, infuse for 30 minutes - used externally for compresses, baths.


3. 50-100 g of raw root, chopped on a grater, insist in 0.5 liters of 40% alcohol or cologne for 1 week or more for rubbing and compresses for diseases of the joints, muscles, sciatica.



It should be noted that kupena stocks in forests are declining. It is necessary to breed it in gardens and forests by seeds (sow under winter) and rhizomes..
