Wild medicinal plants of Donbass. Ocimum acridum, sweet bitter nightshade.

Sedgebrush caustic (Sedum acre L.)


Molodilo, messenger, ukr.: chasnik gadyachiy, roshidnik, soboche milo. The plant is poisonous.

Ochitok caustic - a small perennial succulent plant from the family of Thickleberries, height 5-20 cm, which like a carpet covers the soil, the leaves are small, very succulent. The flowers are golden yellow. The flowering of the acerbic purgative in June-July.

The whole plant has a spicy, pepper-like taste and a distinctive garlic-like odor. Stripped grass cleanser does not wilt for a long time and continues to bloom even in the attic. Therefore, before drying, the herb should be cut with a knife or lightly dried in an oven or warm stove or scalded with boiling water and then finished drying in the attic.

It grows on dry sandy and stony soils in many areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. It is bred for decorative purposes.

The herb of the purgative is used, less often the juice, which contain alkaloids, glycosides, vitamin C, wax, sugars, organic acids, tannins, flavones and other substances.

It has a pronounced local irritant effect - undiluted juice can cause inflammation and blisters on the skin. It is used in folk medicine for constipation, scrofula, gastritis, scurvy, diathesis, epilepsy, anemia, allergies, jaundice, the initial stage of dropsy, fever, atherosclerosis.

Prof. S. А. Tomilin recommended caustic purgative in hypertension. In Bulgaria it is used for stomach ulcers, heartburn, prolapse of the rectum, as a painkiller for hemorrhoids, for irritation and severe itching in the anal area. Externally - an infusion of herb cleanser washed wounds and ulcers, crushed fresh herb applied to scabs on the head, calluses and cancerous tumors. Poultices of boiled in beer herb purgative applied to sore joints. Juice and ointment of fresh and dry herb on pork fat - for calluses, warts, purulent wounds and ulcers, age spots, freckles, lichens, itchy dermatoses, eczema, broken bones, rashes and purulent crusts on the head. Such ointment with the addition of camphor is used for swelling and joint diseases.

А. П. Popov recommends to prepare ointment from condensed decoction of purgative or from 1 part of herb powder mixed with 4 parts of butter or petroleum jelly. Е. Н. Zalesova and others recommended 15 g of grass, collected before flowering, boiled in 350 ml of milk or beer, boiling to half and take 80 g 2-3 times a day.

Methods of use:


1. 1-2 sts. spoonfuls of herb cleansing insist 1 h in 250 ml of boiling water - 15 ml 3 times a day 30 minutes after meals for hypertension.


2. 10% infusion of herb purificator herb 15 ml 3 times a day 30 minutes after meals for hypotension (A. П. Popov, B. Г. Wolynski).


3. 1 Art. spoonful of herb cleanser boiled for 10 minutes in 300 ml of water - 80 ml 3 times a day before meals for anemia, dropsy, constipation (D. Pamukov).


4. Powder of leaves - 1 g with sugar morning and evening in epilepsy for 3 months (E. Н. Zalesova) or powder of leaves and flowers of purgative - 0.5-2 g 3 times a day after meals for dropsy, intestinal atony (L. Я. Sklarevsky).


5. Juice herb flowers flowers cleanser fresh or canned 40% alcohol 1:1 - 1 tsp. spoonful of water after meals for constipation, dropsy.


6. 10% decoction of the herb of flowers cleanser for mouthwash for ulcerative stomatitis.


7. Collection of herbs purgative, St. John's wort, hawthorn flowers and mistletoe leaves - 20 g each; 1 tsp. spoonful of the mixture insist in 250 ml of boiling water - 1/3 cup 3 times a day 30 min after meals for hypertension (S. А. Tomilin).



Due to the toxicity of purgative, caution should be used when consuming it.

On dry sandy soils and in pine forests, especially in the northern areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, grows the common purgative (hare's cabbage) (S. telephium L.). It differs from the first in height (10-70 cm) and fleshy leaves up to 3-4 cm long and 1-2 cm wide, which are edible (they are put in soup, vinaigrette, salad, eaten raw or sour). It is used in folk medicine like caustic orchid, as well as in impotence, various bleeding and as a blood purifier, herb infusion and fresh roots - in female infertility. In these diseases used 20% infusion of herbs 1/3-1/2 cup 3 times a day or juice 30 ml per reception. Fresh ground leaves, as well as poultices of dried herbs are used in arthritis.

From the fresh herb of the large purgative herb (S. L.) an aqueous extract (biosed) was obtained and used in the form of injections as an aloe-like biostimulant.

Sweet-bitter nightshade (Solanum dulcamara L.)


Glystnik, nadtynnik, ukr.wormweed, viper weed, vovchi jagodi. The plant is poisonous.

Sweet-bitter nightshade is a perennial strongly branched climbing semi-shrub with a woody rhizome, stems up to 2 m or more long, from the nightshade family. The sweet-bitter nightshade blooms from May through September. The fruit is green, ripe - bright red berries. When chewing the stem, a sweet flavor is felt at first, which then changes to a bitter flavor. Grows ubiquitously along the banks of bodies of water, in floodplain forests, shrubs, plantings, and moist places.

The herbaceous part of the stems with leaves of nightshade is used for medicinal purposes . The raw material contains poisonous glycoalkaloids solanine and others, and saponin glycosides dulcamarin and dulcamarin, potassium, carotene, pectins, tannins and other substances.

Included in the Pharmacopoeias of France and the GDR. We use in folk medicine for catarrhs of the upper respiratory tract, bronchitis, whooping cough, bronchial asthma, skin diseases, rheumatism, gout, metabolic arthrosis. Decoctions of nightshade herbs are also used for lotions, washes, baths, mush of crushed fresh leaves and berries for wounds, rye, lichen and other skin diseases.

Methods of application:


1. 1.5% decoction of nightshade shoots with the addition of 30 g of sugar syrup - 1/3 cup 3 times a day after meals for gout, rheumatism and chronic skin diseases (S. А. Tomilin).


2. 1 Art. spoon of raw materials boiled 1 h in 0.5 liters of water over low heat - 15 ml 2-3 times a day as an expectorant, diuretic.


3. 10% tincture of nightshade on 40% alcohol - 10-30 drops 3 times a day for bronchial asthma, urticaria, cystitis, flu.


4. Powder of leaves or stems of nightshade - 0.1-0.5 g (on the tip of a knife) 2-3 times a day after meals for 7 days for cystitis, flu, neuralgia, heavy menstruation.


5. Collection of shoots of sweet-bitter nightshade, arnica flowers, hawthorn, hoof leaves, horsetail herb and violet tricolor, herb with celandine root and bark cruschina - 20 g each; 1 tbsp. spoonful of the mixture insist in 250 ml of boiling water, take 1/3 cup 3 times a day for joint diseases (S. А. Tomilin).



Due to the poisonous nature of the plant, ingestion requires caution, especially with prolonged use.

Black nightshade grows everywhere in vegetable gardens and weedy places (S. spp. nigrum L.) is an annual plant. The ripe berries are harmless and are eaten. The unripe fruit, herb and root of nightshade are considered poisonous.

Students from the island of Madagascar, studying at the Donetsk Medical Institute, reported that they use the leaves of this plant as food (for seasoning),

In folk medicine, mature fruits of nightshade, its juice and young shoots and grass of nightshade are used. It is used similarly to sweet-bitter nightshade, and is also used for neuroses, nocturnal pollutions, constipation, cramps, allergies, spastic stomach and intestinal pain. Fresh leaves, juice of berries and herbs of nightshade, and the leaf mush mixed with vegetable oil - in gangrenous stomatitis, boils, sores, furunculosis, eczema, wounds and ulcers.

In India, nightshade fruit is used for fever, diarrhea, eye diseases; the juice of the plant is used for chronic liver diseases, tuberculosis and dysentery. The plant is part of the choleretic preparation "LIV-52", used for the treatment of liver diseases.

М. Ф. Ignatenko (d. Konstantinovka) recommends in inoperable cancer decoction of 1 st. spoonfuls of grass with flowers and green berries of nightshade in 1.5 cups of water (boil for 10-15 minutes), take 15 ml 3-4 times a day. Physician N. Г. Kovaleva recommends eating ripe fruits of black nightshade for patients with hypertension and atherosclerosis..
