Blue lilac - Polemonium caeruleum. Family Polemoniaceae.

Tenderness and beauty of flowers of blueberry blue, decorativeness of large leaves are combined with pronounced medicinal properties. This large (up to 1 m) perennial grass forms real thickets in particularly favorable conditions. Abundant lilac-leaved, rather large flowers of bluebells (2-3 cm), collected in a panicle spreading inflorescence, create an impression of cultivated flower beds (Fig. 22).

Blue bluestem is found in the forest and forest-steppe zones of the European and Asian parts of the USSR. Blueberry thickets are known in the Far East and in the Amur Region. It is picky about habitats, requiring humus-rich soils and sufficient flowing moisture. It lives in damp meadows, in river valleys, in bushes and even in the mountains, rising up to the upper boundary of the forest. Less frequently occurs in dry meadows and birch-aspen forests.

The medicinal raw material of blueberry is the rhizome, short and densely surrounded by roots. But all other parts of the blueberry plant are also medicinal. It is very difficult to collect the raw material of bluebonnet in natural thickets, so it has long been introduced into culture. Its plantations are especially significant in Belarus. Collect raw materials of blueberry during the formation of flower-bearing stems.

In the underground parts of blueberry blue are found resins, organic acids, saponins (up to 30%). There are also fatty and essential oils, alkaloids, glycosides, and tannins. Infusion, decoction and extract of the roots of blueberry blue used as an expectorant for bronchitis, catarrh of the upper respiratory tract, pulmonary tuberculosis. As an expectorant, blue bilberry is even more active than the imported senega.
