Common Elmberry
.The common mountain ash is a well-known tree up to 10 m tall, less often a shrub in the rose-flower family. The fruits are spherical berry-shaped, red, sour, bitter, slightly tart to the taste. After the first frosts, the fruits lose their tartness and become tasty, somewhat sweet. Common mountain ash blooms in May - early June. The fruit ripens in September, remaining on the tree until deep winter. Nektaronos (Fig. 69).

Common mountain ash is distributed almost all over the European part of the former USSR, in the Urals, Caucasus and Siberia. Grows in mixed and coniferous forests, between shrubs, along edges and glades. Cultivated as a food and ornamental plant.
Mature fruits of mountain ash, harvested from September, are used. Their odor is faint and their taste is bitter-sour.
Chemical composition
.Rowan fruits contain a significant amount of carotene, ascorbic acid (up to 92 mg%), vitamin P, essential oil, malic, citric acids, bitter and tannins, sugars, pigments, sorbitol alcohol, antibacterial substances. The leaves contain ascorbic acid (up to 84.2 mg%).
Action and application
.Fruits of mountain ash are used in medicine as a multivitamin remedy, for the prevention and treatment of avitaminosis. Included in vitamin collections.
In Bulgaria is used syrup from the juice of fresh, ripe mountain ash fruit for rheumatic pains, kidney stones and bladder stones, as a diuretic and laxative, as well as a high-vitamin remedy (juice of 1 kg of mountain ash fruit cooked with 600 g of sugar).
In Austrian medicine, mountain ash fruit is used for diarrhea, stomach blockage and rheumatism.
In Polish medicine mountain ash is recommended as a high-vitamin remedy for kidney and bladder diseases, renal colic and violation of salt metabolism.
In Russian folk medicine mountain ash is used as an appetite-increasing agent, a mild laxative, diuretic and regulating menstrual cycle. In the form of tincture - for hemorrhoids. Fresh juice and dried fruit are used for dysentery and scurvy.

Blackberry
.Blackberry is a low, dense shrub of the rose-flower family, 1.5-2 m high. The leaves are similar in shape to cherry leaves, but more shiny. Flowers are penta-type, white or pink, in shield-shaped inflorescences. Fruits are large, black, with a blue plaque, 6-15 mm in diameter, juicy, collected in bunches. Black mountain ash blooms in June - July, fruits ripen in late summer - early fall. This plant is almost disease free. Native to North America. Cultivated in the USSR as a food, medicinal and ornamental plant.
The ripe fruits of mountain ash are used. The flavor is pleasantly sour-sweet, tart.
Chemical composition
.In the fruit found a lot of vitamin P, ascorbic acid, sugar (up to 9.5%), as well as organic acids, carotene. Lots of iodine; flavonoids, antacyans have been found. In terms of acid content, blackcurrant rowan significantly surpasses tangerines, strawberries, raspberries, red currants. It has more vitamin P than other rowan species.
Black rowanberries are a concentrate of vitamin P. Picked rowan fruits do not spoil for a long time, as they contain substances that inhibit the reproduction of microbes.
Action and application
.In recent years, the fruit of blackcurrant rowan began to be used for treatment (in the form of extract and infusion), prescribed for hypertension and thyrotoxicosis.
Black mountain ash fruits are used in the food industry for making jams, jams, sours, juices, syrups, marmalade, marshmallows, pastilles, soft drinks and others. In dried form, they are used to make fruit tea.
