Motherwort pentelopastny (motherwort mossy, motherwort hairy) - a perennial herbaceous plant from the family of guboflorum, height 50 - 150 cm. The stem is erect, tetrahedral, pubescent with long hairs, weakly branched. Leaves are suprotic petiolate, dark green above and grayish below, soft-fibered, three to five-lobed, coarsely toothed along the margin, with glandular hairs on both sides. Flowers are small, two-headed, pink, gathered in whorls in the axils of upper leaves. Motherwort five-lobed blooms from June to September. A good nectar bearer (Fig. 63).

Motherwort pentelopastny is distributed in the European part of the USSR, Western Siberia, Central Asia and the Caucasus. It grows on wastelands, along roads, in clearings and pastures, on fallow lands, bluffs and riverbanks. In recent years it has been introduced into culture as a medicinal plant. Motherwort cordial is closely related to motherwort five-lobed.

The oblique flowering tops 30-40 cm long, collected during the flowering period, without thick stems, are used. The smell of motherwort herb has a faint odor, the taste is bitter.

Chemical composition

In motherwort herb found alkaloids 0.035-0.400% (only at the beginning of flowering), glycosides, essential oil, tannins, bitter, sugary substances, saponins, flavonoids, ascorbic acid (traces) and vitamin A. The leaves contain 23.6-65.7 mg% ascorbic acid. The chemical composition of motherwort is not fully understood.

Action and application

Experimentally established that the plant motherwort is not toxic and preparations of it have a calming effect on the central nervous system, slow the heart rate, increase the strength of heart contractions and lower blood pressure, have hypotensive, sedative properties.

Used motherwort five-lobed as a sedative, replacing valerian and giving a better effect than its preparations. Infusion of leaves and flowering tops of motherwort was used in the clinic of the Tomsk Medical Institute in cardiovascular neuroses, hypertension, angina, cardiosclerosis, myocarditis, heart defects and basid disease. The same positive conclusions were obtained in Moscow at the S. S. Hospital. П. Botkin, as well as in many other clinics, where it was found that under the influence of motherwort extract in patients with myocardiopathy decreased dyspnea, and in patients with essential hypertension reduced blood pressure.

Motherwort herb is included in the State Pharmacopoeia of the USSR in 1968. and official in the GDR and FRG.

Motherwort preparations are widely used as a means of regulating the functional state of the central nervous system.

In Poland, motherwort herb is used for neuroses, angina pectoris, heart defects, myocarditis, hysteria, respiratory diseases, etc.

In Bulgarian medicine motherwort heartwort is used as an anticonvulsant and sedative for neuroses, especially in menopause, painful menstruation, anemia and as a diuretic. In Bulgarian folk medicine, motherwort preparations are used as a general tonic for tuberculosis, various nervous diseases, chlorosis, cough, as a diuretic and as a means of regulating the menstrual cycle.

In Indian medicine, motherwort pentatholon is used as a diaphoretic and stomachic.

In Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, motherwort is prescribed for palpitations and pain in the heart area, in England it is recommended for hysteria, neuralgia and cardiac weakness, in the United States herb motherwort has long been used instead of valerian.

In Chinese medicine is used motherwort spirsky as a styptic, uterine bleeding, endometritis, as a hypotensive, improving blood circulation and stimulant. A decoction of the plant weakens the effects of adrenaline on the blood vessels. Seeds as a diuretic, for glaucoma. The herb and seeds are used externally for some skin diseases.
