Chemical composition
.In lupulin, with which the glands of hops are saturated, are found essential oil of complex composition (up to 3%), organic acids (valerianic acid, etc.).), yellow pigment, resinous and bitter, fatty and tannins, wax, alkaloid chomulin. The leaves contain ascorbic acid (up to 173.6 mg%).
Action and application
.Hop cones are used to prepare an infusion that has sedative, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, gastrointestinal tonic and appetite-enhancing effects. Appointed in the form of infusion or as part of collections in neuroses (especially in menopause), insomnia, gastritis and as a remedy that reduces painful irritation of the bladder in cystitis.
In France, common hops are called "northern grapes" and the cones are used for treatment. According to French researchers, they have tonic and soporific properties. It is stronger than salicylic acid in its antiseptic properties due to the influence of lupulin (Garnier). It can be used as a remedy for excessive sexual excitability, as a remedy to strengthen the cardiovascular system, especially in myocardial weakness and as an appetite enhancer and digestive aid.
In Poland, hop cones are used for general weakness, neurasthenia, insomnia, stomach ailments and constipation.
In Bulgaria, cones (in higher doses) and glands of hops (in small doses) are used as a stomach aroma bitter, diuretic, soothing for insomnia, complaints in menopause, with increased sexual excitement, frequent pollutions and other diseases remedy.
In the GDR also used hop cones containing lupulin, which has a calming effect with increased sexual excitability, insomnia, used in the form of decoction. Common hops have been used for brewing since the 5th century (Dorfler and Roselt, 1964).
In Austria, the young shoots and glands of hops, which contain lupulin, are used. The bitterness contained in lupulin gives a bitter flavor. It is used in neuroses, as a sedative, for insomnia and to increase appetite. The effect of hops in increased sexual arousal is also well known. A pillow filled with fresh hop cones has a soporific effect, which even a very critical doctor might believe, as Neithaller notes.
When working with hops there is a disease "hop pickers", expressed in a sense of drowsiness, sweating, excitement, fear, fever, pain in the heart area, shortness of breath, can occur phenomena of chronic eczema.
Treatment with hop preparations should only be carried out under the supervision of a physician (Neithaller, 1964).
In domestic folk medicine, common hop is used as a digestive aid to improve digestion, gastritis, as an anthelmintic, scurvy. Externally - in the form of a water decoction, as an analgesic, sedative and to strengthen hair (in the form of baths). For insomnia, medicinal pillows that contained hop cones inside have long been used. Russian doctors have also long been used Lupulin, which has, according to their observations, a good effect in inflammation of the bladder and as a tonic for neurasthenia, neuralgia, radiculitis, furunculosis, general metabolic disorders. Externally - for lichen and to strengthen hair in the form of lotions and washes.
Lupulin, which is rich in hop glands, is included in ointments against ulcers and boils.
Common hops are used in baking and brewing.
